Subtle eclipse!

Everyday, every moment there’s something amiss.
A gleam that’s futile, and obscure is bliss.
Pastels and pale, are no more that stale,
reverting to radiance was of no avail.
Rhyming your flute with tune of my anklet;
smitten by the canvas smeared in scarlet,
smudged in the froth of a silent ‘splendid kiss’ !

In pursuit of happiness....

I remember much vividly the name of our annual college fest. Brainchild of some real brainy pupils, it was named ‘Dil-lights’. A splitted version of ‘Delights’, the Hinglish name was deduced after going through much of those tedious selective procedures owing to the dual meaning that it conveyed, both nearly synonymous with each other! This instance testifies the supremacy of happiness in establishing colors to our lives. Happiness, in definition, can be expanded as a feeling of joy or a sense of delight that’s in response to some desirable action, anything undesired always seems to keep you at bay from that sparkling smile on your face, there’s a flat denial from those bout of laughter to accompany the ‘dejected you’. Dejection, the extreme opposite of happiness, stands equally important as the former. The two emotional outbursts being poles apart, which just can’t ever show up in coalition, somehow do manage to substitute each other turn by turn during the tenure of our lifetime. We understand the significance of happiness after being subjected to the hardships; and it can be said that life has to be a proper admixture of happiness and gloom coz if not for the spines, a rose is just another flower, beautiful but coming handy. We humans are admirers of rarity and things that don’t put us on chase of it don’t qualify to be ‘exciting’.

Happiness is just what it is, irrespective of how so ever big or small the causative factor may be! The elation of cracking a hard nut is certainly different than that of getting a home delivered pizza or a new haircut! And you are just not supposed to compare any two. You are happy when you see the question you are well versed with is there on the university exam paper, you are happy when you notice a tiny bloom appearing on the plant that you irrigated every morning, you are happy when your loved one is declared to be out of danger in the hospital cot, you are happy when you help some elderly cross the road, you are happy when you are praised for your achievements, and definitely on cloud nine when you get to meet your good old buddies after almost a decade……and dare I equate any two of them?......each one is so much in contrast with the other and yet in sync while drawing a similarity- with that conclusive smile!

It forms interesting phrases when teamed with different words as per the concerned milieu, for eg. ‘Happy journey’, ‘Happy anniversary’ et al. Sometimes it’s paired with certain words which makes the cite purely paradoxical, the one like ‘Happily married couple’!! And when the same couple moves apart after losing out on ‘compatibility quotient’, then to add pepper to their woes, the caption of their tagged picture in some friend’s album is changed to somewhat like ‘the ex(s) in their happier times’. Many people may chuckle on this, but the same can be extremely disturbing for the duo whose alliance was once envied for being picture perfect. Here, the pleasure that the other people are deriving from their pains is smeared with streaks of grey ….. Did we ever imagine that happiness can be wicked??

Different people have different perspectives when it comes to weighing happiness. Some find it in giving happiness to others, some in the arms of their lover while few others in spirituality; and I find a tinge of it in my meaningless doodles ;-). They say that money can’t buy you happiness, agreed! But let’s not forget human tendencies. A recent survey report has revealed that we are almost 10 times happier after finding ourselves to be earning more than our friends... Now what’s your say on this? Astonished? Of course not…coz all of us know that it does give a certain high on discovering the same! And the one who denies, I guess is either some exalted saint or a bloody big hypocrite! The world in which we are dwelling today counts largely on the game of bucks ….. and I genuinely keep my fingers crossed that one fine day, it does not turn into a place where we’ll be charged for smiling!

I always read a column in Times Life (weekly supplement) titled ‘God and I’; inside that there are some five fill ups, one of them being ‘True contentment lies in’. On personal level, I’ll say that happiness and contentment go hand in hand; nothing in the world can match the level of contentment that is brought about by witnessing that glare on the cheeks of those people who matter to you a lot; and the ecstasy in being contented appears as if a long lost phenomenon, which still does exist but we repeatedly fail to recognize it’s true worth.

More than lightening you up, I made you ponder and ponder…. apologies… for I am no host of some laughter riot…… but like you, just another human, on a persistent move in pursuit of happiness! I’d even play a jester, as after all, it’s a luxury on part of the beholder to spot those glowing cheeks, and its beauty is accentuated when an even more fabulous smile is affixed on it……..lose it never, it’s gotta be treasured forever!

Now, isn’t that a perfect ‘happy ending’?
